Located in a picturesque center of North Carolina; southwest of Raleigh, Grace Christian School stands as a testament to the power of a comprehensive, Christ-centered education. Under the guidance of Stuart Shumway, the head of school, it has become a place where students not only excel academically but are also nurtured in their spiritual, emotional, social, and physical development.

With a clear commitment to integrating a Christian worldview into every facet of student life, the school provides a unique and holistic approach to education, one that places an emphasis on the whole person, body, mind, and spirit.

At the heart of Grace Christian School’s philosophy is a belief in the importance of incorporating a Christian worldview into all aspects of academic life. For Shumway, this is not merely an addition to the curriculum but an essential aspect of the educational process.

“Our purpose as a school is to move kids closer to Jesus, and the entirety of the curriculum is integrated with both the biblical worldview and that purpose,” he explains.

This approach is evident across every subject and extracurricular activity, from fine arts and athletics to core subjects such as English, science, math, history, and humanities.

Fostering a Deeper Relationship with God
One of the most profound aspects of this worldview integration is its ability to enhance the learning process. Shumway reflects on the nature of education when viewed through the lens of faith, stating, “If the God of the Bible is the God that created the universe and the world in which we live, then the study of the elements of that world is filled with purpose.”

This perspective not only transforms the study of science or mathematics into spiritual endeavors but also gives them deeper significance. For example, Shumway points to the precision of language demonstrated in the Bible.

“When Jesus talks about the emphasis of even, not one jot or tittle shall fall away until the whole of the law is fulfilled,” he notes, referring to a passage in the Gospel of Matthew that highlights the importance of punctuation. This understanding of linguistic precision helps students appreciate the beauty and intentionality of God’s creation.

In every classroom, whether students are studying the complexities of the human body in biology or discussing the principles of arithmetic, the idea that all knowledge ultimately points to the Creator is woven into learning.

This approach sets Grace Christian apart, offering an educational experience that is not merely about acquiring information but about fostering a deeper relationship with God through the pursuit of knowledge.

Whether it is a third grader working on a math problem or a high school senior competing in a varsity sport, everything is treated with the same level of commitment and care.

Growth, Leadership, and Excellence

Grace Christian School’s core values, growth, reaching for absolute truth, Christian leadership, and excellence, are not abstract concepts but practical principles that shape student life. These values guide students not only in their academic pursuits but also in their interactions with one another, their communities, and their faith.

For Shumway, the goal is clear. “We want to make good students who are well-rounded,” he explains.

This commitment to holistic education is reflected in the school’s curriculum, which includes a strong emphasis on fine arts, athletics, and community service. Through exposure to a broad range of activities, students are encouraged to develop their talents, step into leadership opportunities, and serve others with a servant-hearted mentality.

The school also places a premium on leadership development. Students can step into roles through student government, chaplaincy positions, or community service initiatives.

“Our students need to be ready to take over for us as adults,” Shumway asserts.
As a result, students are equipped not only with academic knowledge but also with the character and leadership skills needed to lead with integrity and compassion.

Excellence is another value woven into the culture of Grace Christian. Shumway emphasizes that no task is too small to be done with excellence. “We do not want to go lightly on anything,” he says. “Whether it is a third grader working on a math problem or a high school senior competing in a varsity sport, everything is treated with the same level of commitment and care.” This approach creates a culture where students strive to do their best, understanding that their efforts reflect both their faith and their commitment to God’s purposes.

Balancing Academic Rigor with Spiritual Development

One of the key challenges for any Christian school is balancing academic rigor with spiritual development. At Grace Christian, that balance is achieved through a carefully crafted curriculum that meets high academic standards while supporting spiritual growth. The goal is not just to produce academically successful students but to develop individuals who are intellectually and spiritually prepared to navigate the world.

Grace Christian’s academic program is designed to challenge students while providing the support they need to thrive. Shumway notes, “We want our students to be well-prepared for whatever comes next, whether that is college, the workforce, or ministry.”

The school offers a wide range of programs, including college and dual-enrollment course offering courses and an academically gifted program that provides high-achieving students with additional opportunities for intellectual growth. Shumway sees this as an important part of the school’s mission.

“We are committed to ensuring that every student, whether gifted or having learning differences, reaches their full potential. With a dedicated team of 12 specialized staff members, our Learning Support Program serves 11 percent of the student body, providing tailored support for those with IEPs and 504 plans.” he says.

For students who require extra support, Grace Christian offers specialized programs to meet their needs. The school’s special education services provide individualized assistance while maintaining the academic rigor of the curriculum.

At the same time, high-achieving students are challenged through advanced coursework and critical thinking exercises. Dr. Lauren Morrison, the Director of Academics, explains that raising academic rigor involves revising standards to encourage deeper learning. “We want our students to not only recall information but to differentiate between concepts, apply what they have learned to real-world scenarios, and think critically about the material,” she says. This approach prepares students for higher education and equips them to defend their faith in a world that may not share their values.

Shaping Student Outcomes

At Grace Christian School, teachers and staff serve as both educators and spiritual mentors. Shumway emphasizes the importance of hiring teachers who are skilled in their subjects and aligned with the school’s Christian values.

“It is the teachers who execute the vision,” he says. “They are the ones spending seven hours a day with the students, not the administrators.” Teachers are expected to model Christian values and integrate faith into their instruction.

To ensure they are equipped for this responsibility, Grace Christian provides ongoing professional development. This includes Bible studies, workshops on instructional best practices, and training in biblical worldview integration. Shumway explains that the goal is for teachers to grow spiritually as well as professionally. “We want our staff to see their work as a calling, not just a job,” he says.

This mindset contributes to a culture where teachers are deeply invested in the growth of their students.

Looking Toward the Future

As the school looks to the future, Shumway is optimistic about continued growth. Grace Christian has experienced significant expansion in recent years, more than tripling in size since 2018. Shumway attributes this growth to the school’s commitment to providing an excellent education rooted in faith.

“We are seeing growth in our standardized test scores, ACT scores, and character development,” he says. “Our students who have been here for four, five, or six years are flourishing academically and spiritually.”

Grace Christian is also expanding its facilities to support its growing student body. The school has a 95 million dollar master plan, with the first phase of expansion set for completion within four years. This expansion will provide more specialized spaces for science, the arts, and physical education, ensuring that students have a strong environment for academic and extracurricular pursuits.

Ultimately, the goal of Grace Christian School is to continue providing an education that prepares students to excel academically, spiritually, and socially. With a strong commitment to Christian values, a rigorous academic program, and a focus on leadership and character development, the school is poised to continue making a meaningful impact on its students for years to come.
