Hutto Independent School District (ISD)

Jeni Neatherlin, Superintendent

Leading Hutto ISD to New Heights

Jeni Neatherlin's journey to becoming the superintendent of Hutto Independent School District (ISD) has been one of consistent growth, strategic leadership, and an unwavering commitment to student success. With a background as a teacher, coach, and administrator at various levels of education, Neatherlin has cultivated a unique blend of hands-on experience and executive insight that positions her as a transformative leader for the fast-growing district of Hutto, Texas.

Since taking on the role of superintendent just a year ago, Neatherlin has guided the district through a period of rapid growth, both academically and physically. Hutto ISD, located in a vibrant and expanding community, is poised to experience even more growth under her leadership.

Known for its mascot, the Hippo, Hutto ISD is drawing in new families and businesses, and Neatherlin’s focus on maintaining a strong academic foundation while meeting the demands of an expanding student population is central to the district’s trajectory.

Building a Team for Transformation

Neatherlin's philosophy on leadership emphasizes the power of teamwork.

“You can’t do it alone,” she says, echoing her belief in building strong, collaborative teams. Her leadership journey is defined by a series of roles that have progressively honed her skills—starting as a teacher and coach, moving through the ranks as an assistant principal, high school and middle school principal, and later serving as a Chief Operating Officer. Each step in her career has reinforced her commitment to fostering environments where people can do their best work.

“For me, winning is a habit, and excellence is excellence. Both in academics and extracurriculars, we strive for the best”

This team-oriented approach has been the cornerstone of Neatherlin’s success in turning around underperforming campuses.

“In my first principal position, I was at a failing school, and we took that school from failing to distinctions in just two years,” she recalls.

Her leadership mantra is straightforward: hire the right people, create an environment that supports their growth, and get out of the way to let them do their best work.

Guiding Hutto ISD from Good to Great

School districts under Neatherlin's leadership have not only maintained academic excellence but have also earned recognition for their growth and performance, including from U.S. News & World Report. It's an achievement Neatherlin attributes to high expectations and continuous improvement.

“I believe that clarity precedes competency,” Neatherlin explains. “When everyone—whether staff or students—knows what’s expected of them, they rise to meet that bar.

This mindset has created a culture of high standards at Hutto ISD, where educators push each other to grow and innovate. Neatherlin’s approach doesn’t just focus on the top performers but also emphasizes meeting the needs of at-risk students, ensuring that every student has the opportunity to succeed.

Whether it's integrating new technology into classrooms, fostering a growth mindset among teachers, or encouraging leadership development among students, Neatherlin’s goal is to ensure that every member of the Hutto ISD community is consistently growing and improving.

“We push everybody, not just the brightest,” she notes, emphasizing that success in education is about more than just academic performance—it's about holistic development for both students and educators alike.

Bridging Academics and Extracurriculars

Neatherlin also places a strong emphasis on the importance of extracurricular activities in shaping well-rounded students. She views extracurriculars as a key element in teaching students vital skills like teamwork, leadership, and resilience. Whether participating in athletics, band, or theater, these activities help build students' confidence and prepare them for life beyond the classroom.

“For me, winning is a habit, and excellence is excellence. Both in academics and extracurriculars, we strive for the best,” she says.

By fostering an environment where academics and extracurriculars complement each other, Hutto ISD aims to graduate students who are not only prepared for college and careers but also equipped with the social and emotional skills necessary for success in life.

A Vision for the Future: Advice for Aspiring Educators

Reflecting on her own journey, Neatherlin is passionate about supporting the next generation of educational leaders. She encourages aspiring educators to always seek opportunities for growth, learning, and mentorship.

“Prepare for what you want next. The skills you need to succeed in your next role are often ones you can develop now,” she advises.

Drawing inspiration from unexpected sources—like Arnold Schwarzenegger’s diverse interests in bodybuilding, acting, and politics—Neatherlin emphasizes the importance of being open to learning across different disciplines.

Her advice to young professionals entering the education field is simple: see a need, and meet it. Continuous growth is essential, and as technology and education systems evolve, aspiring leaders must be proactive in developing skills that will set them up for success in the future.

Strategic Planning for Growth

A key component of Hutto ISD's success has been the establishment of a comprehensive strategic plan in partnership with the district’s board of trustees. Neatherlin highlights the importance of cultivating leadership at all levels within the district.

“When we value mentorship and community leadership, the entire district grows in the right way,” she says.

Looking ahead, Neatherlin envisions a future where Hutto ISD continues to grow in alignment with the community’s values, all while maintaining a high standard of educational excellence. The district’s proactive planning, coupled with its commitment to collaboration and continuous improvement, will ensure that it remains at the forefront of Texas school districts for years to come.

Neatherlin’s leadership has set Hutto ISD on a path of sustainable growth and success. Her focus on team-building, high standards, and the integration of academics and extracurricular activities positions the district to thrive amid continued growth. As Hutto ISD prepares for an even brighter future, Neatherlin’s ability to inspire her team, cultivate talent, and prioritize student development will continue to make a lasting impact on the district and the community it serves.
